Albuquerque balloon museum sharing unique history with tourists

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KFDA) - The Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum is sharing the unique history of ballooning with city tourists.

Museum Director Nan Masland says the city is known as the ballooning capital in the world.

The museum was founded in 2005 and named after two balloon explorers, Ben Abruzzo and Maxie Anderson. They were the first to successfully cross the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon.

“That happened in 1979, but of course, Balloon Fiesta also started here in 1972,” said Masland.

Over 50 years later, they are continuing to celebrate the event.

“Ballooning history spans over 200 years and the first time people had a view of the Earth from above was in a balloon,” said Masland. “That history is so important and it’s what we record here and share with our guests.”

The museum not only covers the past, but also the present moment and the future of ballooning.

Masland says there are several exhibits throughout Albuquerque this summer that focus on the Route 66 centennial. At the balloon musuem, they have an exhibit called “Balloons Over Route 66.”

“This is a black and white mural by local artist Jesse Sandoval, and then 43 youth artists were selected for their colorful balloon drawings that are floating above the design,” said Masland.

Within Albuquerque is the longest urban span of Route 66.

“It’s part of our culture. The roadside attraction, that awe and wonder, and just the wonder of the open road is something that you can feel here in Albuquerque,” said Masland.

The museum features stories, footage, artifacts, and more for all visitors to enjoy.

“There are artifacts that you’ve never seen before, and we’re looking to give you a new perspective on the world of ballooning,” said Masland. “We have really engaging exhibits that tell unique stories and history of ballooning with incredible artifacts.”

Along with the exhibits, there are hands-on activities.

“You’ll walk away with something that is really unique and a deeper understanding of the world of ballooning and what makes Albuquerque so unique,” said Masland.
